John Bostock is an ISM Registered Private Teacher

With a Master's degree in Music and Liturgy I can provide advice and support to clergy, PCCs and other lay people leading to an increased understanding of the synergy between music and liturgy in Common Worship.

John Bostock began his musical studies at the age of 13 years studying the organ, piano and Special Studies (General Musicianship, theory, aural and history) privately with his school music teacher, a York Minster Songman, who saw his potential at that age. His organ lessons were eventually transferred to York Minster under the tutorship of the Assistant Organist of the time.

He then studied both organ and piano at Huddersfield Polytechnic between 1968-1971 gaining the Polytechnic Teacher’s Diploma in Music and then, in 1977-1978, the Polytechnic’s Graduate Teacher’s Diploma in Music.

Between 1972-1973, he entered Gypsy Hill College of Education, Surrey where he gained the University of London’s Certificate in Education and the Licentiate of the Trinity College of Music, London in the Art of Organ Playing.

In 1973 he was appointed Head of Music at Armley Middle School in Leeds where he stayed until 1990 when he was appointed Teacher of Music and Religious Studies at Rossett High School, in Harrogate. It was at Rossett School that he found he had an interest in liturgical studies through the teaching of GCSE Religious Studies.

In 1996 he was appointed Organist of All Saints Parish Church, Huntington, York where he became involved with the many different kinds of music and worship styles, and where the new experimental Common Worship prayers were being evaluated to assess congregational response.

In 1999, he retired early from teaching and decided that a change in career direction was needed. Between 2000-2003, after studying with the Open University, he gained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree and between 2003-2005, a Master of Arts Degree in Music and Liturgy through Leeds University.

During 2003, at the start of his MA Degree, an opportunity arose that made it possible for him to apply the concepts of this course in practical terms. He was appointed Liturgical Organist and Director of Music at St Mary’s Parish Church, Haxby, York which, at that time, had a liturgy based on the Alternative Service Book (1980) formula and very traditional musical ideas. His remit, on his appointment, was to bring St Mary’s Church into the twenty-first century and develop all-age worship with both the Eucharist and Evensong through the correct use of Common Worship liturgy, which must also include all genres of music (ancient, modern, traditional and contemporary, as well as different cultures).
